Tercentenary Celebration of 300 years of Freemasonry in 2017

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2017

300 logo

The first recorded Freemasonry under the United Grand Lodge of England was the formation of four Lodges within one square mile within the City of London on 24th June 1717. We therefore celebrate the Tercentenary i.e. 300 years of Masonry in England in 2017.

The Provincial Grand Master RWBro. Ian Kingsbury has given all Freemasons in the Province of Devonshire three campaign aims for 2017: - 1.  To ensure we all have an opportunity to Celebrate 300 years of Freemasonry. 2.  To Promote Freemasonry in the Community. 3.  To enhance the number of Freemasons in Devon to include New Masons and Joining and Rejoining Members.

So he put a Team together consisting of myself, WBro. Dr Adrian Rogers, WBro. Phil Ratcliff and WBro. Bob Woods and called us “TEAM 300”.

We have recruited specialist help such as: - WBro. Colin Gale’s Membership Team focusing on Masonic Promotion and Promoting Lodge Open Days. WBro. Brian Adams, WBro. Barry Page and WBro. Clive Eden, WBro. Vaughan Harris, WBro. Sean Crannis, WBro. Nick Lewis and WBro. Martin Elliott to help organise events.

There is no doubt that we will be asking for much more help as time goes by.

In preparation for 2017 we have the following projects: -

The Tercentenary Banner

The Province of Devonshire has manufactured a Banner that will be dedicated by the Provincial Grand Chaplain at the PGL meeting on Monday 10th April 2017. It will complete a journey through the 8 Provinces that form the South West Region. Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney, Hampshire and the IofW, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. The cost of the Banner in excess of £3000 was incurred by Lopes Lodge in memory of WBro. John Watts. The Banner Polls and carrying case have been manufactured by WBro. Alex Moody and a Banner carrying case by WBro. Rem Lockton.

Intended Charitable Giving

The returns from the Provincial Grand Secretary’s letter to all Lodge Secretaries asking for voluntary charity return of non-Masonic giving by individual Lodges have been collated by WBro. Barry Page. At the press launch at PGL on 10th April 2017 the PGM will inform the press not only what money Devonshire donates to support the New Masonic Charitable Foundation and the donations to our own Provincial Benevolent Fund, but also the additional amount individual Lodges in Devonshire give to local needs in our community.

The average giving per Lodge is in excess of £1,750 pa. Enabling the PGM to announce that each year Lodges in Devonshire give over a quarter of a million pounds to worthy causes.

Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF) Community Awards 2017

To help Celebrate the Tercentenary in Devonshire the PGM wrote to all Lodges informing them that the MCF intend to award grants totalling £79,000 to 8 Locally Operating Registered Charities nominated by the Brethren of Devonshire.

The PGM asked that all Brethren be consulted, he has collated the returns and the list in priority order is currently being evaluated by UGLE.

Masonic First Aid Initiative

The Tercentenary was not intended as a fund raising opportunity, but for this initiative we needed to raise £12,000 so that Devonshire Masons could provide a First Aid Kit free of charge to at least 300 village and community halls and 200 to other worthy causes in Devon nominated by Freemasons. So the PGM agreed for us to ask Lodges for a one-off contribution to support the Masonic First Aid Initiative.

Freemasons donated a total of £7,100 to this worthy initiative and we thank the PGM for topping us up. The UGLE Tercentenary Planning Committee (TPC) have recognised how worthwhile this initiative is and have contributed 50% of the cost.

This initiative will leave a visible and lasting legacy of Masonic Care within our Province.

New Provincial Tie

The PGM agreed the design of the new Provincial Tie. It combines the existing Province of Devonshire emblem in the form of a shield, with diagonal chains symbolising unity and strength. There has been a massive uptake for the new Provincial Tie, supplies of which are available from the Provincial Office.

Increase Masonic Membership

The PGM is extremely keen that Lodges hold their own open days and other events that Lodges or groups of Lodges may hold to celebrate the Tercentenary and to promote Freemasonry during 2017 for which assistance is available from WBro Colin Gale’s Provincial Membership Team if required.

Tercentenary Lapel Pins

Will be on sale at this year’s PGL at £1 each.

United Grand Lodge of England The UGLE have distributed Tercentenary Car Stickers and advertised the Tercentenary Perpetual Jewel and the new Grand Lodge Tie both of which can be ordered from Toye Kenning and Spencer. The new Jewel can be worn by Master Masons from 24th June 2016. They should be worn on the left breast, to the left of the Royal Arch Jewel.
