Devon Masonic Bowling Association fielded their veteran team of Rick Purnell (Lead), Tommy Thomson (2), Mervyn Benny (3), and skipping Gordon Marshall for the 7th occasion.
R.W.Bro. Christopher Moore, PGM Sussex hosted the games at Worthing Pavilion Bowls Club with 20 teams from 14 Provinces.
Each team played a 4 match round robin for semi-final playoffs from two divisions. Despite the very high winds (30/40+ mph) we enjoyed dry weather. The green was verdant and magnificent, as good as it gets but we have never practiced playing with a swirling wind storm of sufficient force to carry bowls way off any normal line or unable to stop and ditched. A real tester but it was the same for everyone!

No silverware this year, in our 1st match we played the strong host team (Sussex) and they only just managed to beat us but that was enough to spoil our chances for glory having just missed the cut with 6th place. Strangely enough we didn’t play against any of the last 4 place play-off Provinces. 7 teams won all 4 matches and it went down to points difference for the play-offs, so the competition was very strong.
In the final. Wiltshire ‘A’ beat Derbyshire 7-4 with Bedford ‘B’ coming 3rd beating Warwickshire 7-1
A super day’s bowling and superb hosting arrangements, and catching up with many of our old bowling friends from other counties.
Besides bowling, the M.A.C.E. event raised money for charity. So far £6000 has been shared between Prostate Cancer UK, Rise (Domestic abuse sanctuary) and Sussex Snowdrop Trust (Childrens Hospice)
2020 will be hosted being the 10th anniversary by London at Herts Bowling Club Watford on Friday or Saturday 7th/8th August 2020.
There are many Devon Masons out there who also play bowls and we do need new younger members to ensure masonic bowling thrives in our province.
DMBA have regular fixtures both outdoor and indoors throughout the year.
