On Friday, 5th October at the Mustard Seed Café in Sidmouth the Worshipful Master, Jeff Millar, presented a cheque for £1,000 to the Gateway support group. As a project of Sidmouth Parish Church, the Church of St. Giles and St. Nicholas, the Gateway support group is an homeless action group and it is providing support to the homeless and those in danger of becoming homeless within the Sidmouth locale.
Gateway was formed after the tragic death of a homeless man on the Sidmouth seafront in January 2015. Two local residents joined forces with the aim of creating an organisation that could offer tailored practical help and support to people in the Sid Valley who are homeless or likely to become homeless.
As Housing and Social Work professionals, they had the knowledge and skills needed to make a real difference in the community.
The photograph shows W.Bro. Jeff Millar (right) handing the cheque to Gerry Shattock, the Chair of Gateway. On the left is W.Bro. Jeff Bailey, who petitioned the Lodge for donation funding. In responding to the receipt of the cheque, Gerry Shattock said "The money is very welcome as, whilst we currently rely solely on volunteers, the demand for our services and relatively modest funding is growing. Please be assured that every penny will be spent wisely and for the benefit of those who are homeless or who are vulnerably housed."
