The members of the South West Branch of the Widows Sons Masonic Bikers Association were pondering how to support the 2023 Festival using our love of motorcycling. Our Secretary, Bro Michael “Gunny” O’Meara suggested that we should do one of the “Iron Butt” series of endurance rides.
The first one is called the “Saddle Sore” ride and consists of riding 1000 miles in 24 hours. Needless to say, these rides originated in America, but there is now a UK association which certifies the rides. (And the riders?)
The rules for the ride are set by the association, with the emphasis on rider safety. It is not a race – speed limits must be adhered to at all times.
The President, W. Bro Richard Hallett endorsed the idea, so on 25 August 2018 at 0900 a group of Masonic Bikers will set off from Exeter services and hopefully return unscathed by 0900 on 26 August. The route is Exeter, Bristol, Haverfordwest, Bangor, Leeds, Norwich, Brighton, Exeter which is 1176 miles.
Our aim is to raise at least £1000 for the festival and we have already received £310 in pledges. A donations page has been set up at:
You may also meet a Mason wearing a Widows Sons badge and carrying a sponsorship form – don’t hide in the shadows - 1p per mile is only £10!
This is the first event we have planned for the Festival and so far we have eight riders taking part and no doubt there will be more join in. Many thanks for your support.
