Worshipful Brother Paul William Richard Hewson PJGD celebrated 50 years as a Freemason on 28 June 2018 having been initiated into the Plym Lodge No. 3821 on 27 June 1968.
Paul was the son of the Vicar of Looe in Cornwall and being born on 16 July 1943, he was the first child of a Vicar of Looe for over 60 years. Paul grew up in Cornwall attending Truro Cathedral School before moving to King's College in Taunton. On leaving King's College he joined Barclays bank before becoming a stockbroker.
Paul was installed as Master of the Plym Lodge No. 3821 in 1985 by Worshipful Brother Harold Hocking who had initiated him 17 years earlier. Paul became Charity Steward of the Lodge and received active Provincial appointment as Provincial Grand Superintendent of Works in 1994.
At this time he was asked as a stockbroker to deal with the investments of the William Alexander Kneel Endowment Fund which through his wise counsel has now grown to a very substantial amount from relatively modest beginnings and the interest supports non-masonic charities.
In 1999 Paul received Grand Rank of PAGDC and was promoted to PJGD in 2010. Paul has also been a member of Train-Bands Lodge and Chapter No. 2524 and is at present serving a second term as Most of Wise Sovereign of Grandisson Chapter Rose Croix No. 1132 having been recorder for 10 years. He is also a founder member of Louis Marchesi Lodge and Chapter No. 9558.
I spoke at length about his masonic, business and family life and in presenting the certificate, I brought the greetings and congratulations of the Provincial Grand Master RWBro. Ian Kingsbury. The Brethren responded with warm applause. Worshipful Brother Paul thanked me for the way in which I had made the presentation and the research I had made. He was then presented with a gift of past jewels by Worshipful Brother Eric Bootland on behalf of Plym Lodge.
It had been a very special evening as Worshipful Brother Christopher Yard the Assistant Provincial Grand Master and the Provincial Grand Secretary Worshipful Brother Richard Ebrey were in attendance to present the Lodge with its Centenary Warrant. Worshipful Brother Paul Hewson then presented a Grand Lodge certificate to Brother PB Warrick
All then retired for a champagne reception with canapés and an excellent Festive Board ending once again another very happy masonic evening.
W. Bro. Derek G Webber, PSGD
