At the Installation meeting of St. Margaret’s Lodge No. 6128 Topsham, W. Bro Peter Wilkins PPrJGW was presented with a certificate to mark his 50 years of service to the Craft.
W.Bro. Richard Ebrey, PAsstGStdB Provincial Grand Secretary read the following oration:
Peter David Wilkins was Initiated into St. Margaret’s Lodge on Friday the 10th of March – 50 years to this very day!
Educated at Exeter School and his farther being a founder of the Lodge it was only natural the St. Margaret’s should be his Masonic home.
After working his way up a very long Stewards list and through all offices Peter was Installed into the Chair of the Lodge in 1979 – his first of three visits to the St. Margaret’s Master Chair – for he also presided as Master in 1991 and 2012. He also distinguished himself by being continually an officer of the Lodge for 42 years - beating the record previously held by George Spencer. This included a lengthy spell as Lodge Secretary.
Along the way he also found time to take the Chair of the Devonian Lodge of Installed Masters in 2007 of which he is the current Secretary.
Peter was first appointed to PPrSGD in 1988 and subsequently PPrJGW in 1997
Exalted into the Holy Royal Arch in 1968 Peter took the First Principals Chair of St. John the Baptist Lodge in 1984. He presently holds the rank of PPrGSwdB.
At the time of his joining he worked in the family jewellery shops in Exeter and Exmouth which he did until his retirement. Not one to stand still for too long though, Peter took up a position at Sandy Bay Holiday Park during the summer and during the Christmas period he also worked as a temporary Postman.
Mind you, all this work didn’t stop him pursuing his three great hobbies of Rowing, Golf - of which he has a particularly low handicap- and enjoying a good bottle of wine whilst dining out with his wife Viv (!)
Most of us know Peter as a quiet and considerate Mason who does not shout about his achievements. This of course makes writing a life story very difficult and if anything has been said that is wrong, let not the facts get in the way of a good story!
